NYC Planning Commission to review 95 West 95th Street expansion plan

May 6, 2010 - On Tuesday evening, May 4, Community Board 7 passed a unanimous resolution to disapprove a proposal to enlarge the first and second stories of the existing building at 95 West 95th Street. After our announcement of Tuesday's CB7 meeting in the Weekly Participant, 42 neighborhood residents appeared before the community board to give public testimony.

The building in question stretches along Columbus Avenue between 95th and 96th Streets, and currently houses Banco Popular, Subway, Columbus Natural Food, and Hunan Park. Several community board members expressed deep concern for the future of the retail tenants who would be displaced by the proposed new construction.

But the CB7 resolution is only one step in the approval process. The New York City Planning Commission will discuss the proposal at its next Review Session. Although this session is open to the public, it is not a public hearing. While only the commissioners are permitted to speak, the substance of the hearing will provide a basis for future public action.
